‘Department’, no here, RGV is not talking about the Police department but a parallel team of an encounter specialist and a suspended cop along with a few other officers whose main aim is wiping off the Underworld from the face of Mumbai. This department is created by the system only, as the officers here have no rules. Unlike the police department, they can kill gangsters without thinking twice. Now, let’s just keep the story to that.
As you might have already guessed and going by RGV’s track record, the film is full of violence and RGV’s trademark weird camera angles! Now, by weird I mean really weird focusing on the carom board when the characters are planning an important murder, showing a female scratch her thighs and almost buying into Deepak Tijori’s moustache. And these go even worse. Also, there is the sleaziest item number ‘The Dan Dan song’ by Nathalia Kaur that will make you want to get up and leave.
Now, if you can get over all these, there is good to the film too, like portraying in real how the department and the underworld functions. The film starts as a bad medicine and you wait for Amitabh Bachchan to appear. And when he does he steals the show. His nasal dialogue delivery, comic timing can actually make you watch the entire film for him. Though, by the end his character takes a back seat.
Rana Daggubbati is good in his job but somehow I missed the Rana that I saw in ‘Dum Maaro Dum’. Though his voice was dubbed in his debut and his own in this one, his south Indian twang is pretty prominent. Sanjay Dutt is his usual self. Anjana Sukhani acts well. The lady has certainly worked on her skills and it show. Lakshmi Manchu captivates and is a treat to watch. Abhimanyu Singh is wasted and you actually get hurt coz of that. Madhu Shalini irritates as hell. Why did she do this to herself? She can sure do better than this. Vijay Raaz is interesting. Deepak Tijori is simply okay.
There is a bell hanging on Amitabh Bachchan’s wrist that also has an important role to play. The rest of the supporting cast is decent. The background score adds to the drama and the cinematography gets lost between the fast paced and multiple camera angles. The music too has nothing much to boast about.
The film has potential but the story telling needed to be more sober. Its difficult to look past the filthy sleaze shown in the film, especially with Madhu Shalini’s track. The dialogues are interesting though some scenes and dialogues make a serious scene look funny.
Overall, the film is watchable but in parts and yes you can definitely watch it for the legendary Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.
